Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart is a kart racing game with Sonic and SEGA-themed characters, items, and maps. It is a source code modification of Version 2.1, originally based on the Mario Kart mode of SRB2 Riders. The game features over 100 maps for two game modes: the main Race mode and a Battle mode. In the former, players race against staff ghosts and earn medals for completing a course under certain times. In the latter, players fight each other using the items available in the game.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart introduces some new mechanics and techniques, including the sliptide and the Drop Dash. The game also features a wide range of items, such as bananas, sneakers, and egg monitors, that can help or hinder players.

One of the notable features of the game is its focus on momentum and skill-based gameplay, with handling and physics that differ from other kart racers. The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, with support for up to 16 players online and up to four players in local split-screen mode.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart has a dedicated community and is considered a standalone mod for the Sonic the Hedgehog fan game built using the 3D Doom Legacy engine.

Gameplay and mechanics

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart, usually shortened to SRB2Kart or SRB2K, is a kart racing game with Sonic and SEGA-themed characters, items, and maps. The gameplay is typical of kart racing games, with drifting and boosts from drifts, items to help or hinder the player, and other genre staples. However, SRB2Kart's handling and physics differ from other kart racers, with a focus on momentum and skill-based gameplay.

SRB2Kart introduces some new mechanics and techniques, including the sliptide (performed by turning inwards after receiving a boost), the Drop Dash (performed by holding Accelerate while respawning), and the ability to skip on water up to two times with enough momentum. Items thrown behind the player will move much slower than those thrown forward, and certain items (Bananas, Eggman Monitors, and Mines) can be dragged behind the player as a means of defence, though this will cause them to slow down after a short time.

The game features two modes: Race and Battle. In Race mode, players compete on over 100 maps, earning medals for completing courses under certain times. Single Player offers a Time Attack mode where the player races against staff ghosts. Silver medals are awarded for beating a course's best time, and Gold medals are awarded for beating the top staff ghost. Getting certain amounts of medals or playing a set number of races will unlock extra content, including additional cups and a harder race speed. Time Attack mode cannot be played in a cheated game or with any major add-ons loaded.

The principal feature of SRB2Kart is Multiplayer, which can be played offline through local play with up to four players, or online through LAN or the Internet with support for up to 16 players. Split-screen mode is supported for both online and offline modes, with up to four players on each client. Items are provided by item boxes, which are littered across tracks or battle arenas, and there are 16 different items to obtain.

Characters are automatically balanced according to two stats: speed and weight. A high-speed stat allows the player to reach faster speeds at the expense of worse acceleration, and a high weight stat makes it easier to push others around but with less handling and wider drifts as a trade-off. A character's speed and weight also affect how fast they build up drift sparks: a slower, heavier character will build up drift sparks much quicker than a faster, lighter character.

Race tracks and arenas

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart features a wide variety of race tracks and arenas for players to compete in. The game offers over 100 maps, including race tracks and battle arenas, with more available through customisation and mods.

The race tracks are split into 12 cups, with five tracks in each cup. These cups include the Water Cup, Lightning Cup, Fire Cup, Emerald Cup, Chao Cup, SMK Cup, Invincible Cup, and Swap Cup. There are also unlockable cups, such as the Egg Cup, which contains tracks like Kodachrome Void, Boiling Bedrock, and Egg Quarters. Each cup features a variety of themes and track designs, from the icy Blue Mountain Zone to the colourful Megablock Castle Zone. Some tracks, like Daytona Speedway, are player favourites due to their simple layouts and opportunities for shortcuts.

In addition to the race tracks, there are also 29 battle arenas, where players can compete in combat-style game modes. These arenas include the "battal BOWL", which is heavily based on Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff, and the Mementos arena, which features the Grim Reaper as a hazard.

The game also includes Map Hell, a collection of particularly challenging tracks and arenas that can be rarely encountered online or unlocked for single-player mode. These levels include Crystal Abyss Zone, which is one of the longest and most detailed tracks, and CK Cloud Tops 1, which has tight turns and minimal guardrails, making it easy for players to fall off the course.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart offers a diverse range of race tracks and arenas, providing players with a variety of environments and challenges to race through.

Items and weapons

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart, or SRB2Kart, is a kart racing game with Sonic and SEGA-themed characters, items, and maps. The game features a variety of items that can be used to help or hinder players during races and battles. Here is a list of some of the items available in SRB2Kart:

  • Speed Boost: Allows players to quickly recover from crashes or navigate off-road sections with ease. Comes in single and triple varieties.
  • Rocket Sneakers: Provides a speed boost for a limited time, with careful timing being crucial for optimal use.
  • Bananas: A classic kart racing staple, bananas can be placed on the track to cause other racers to slip. Comes in single, triple, and 10x varieties.
  • Spikeballs: Spiraling spike balls that can be fired forward or backward to hit other players or bounced off walls for protection. Comes in single, triple, and quadruple varieties.
  • Jawz: A shark-like missile that locks onto and chases the nearest player. Comes in single and double varieties.
  • Invincibility: Grants the user temporary invulnerability and a speed boost, allowing them to ram into other players and drive off-road without penalty.
  • Steal: Steals an item from a random player and turns the user invisible, providing invulnerability and the ability to drive off-road.
  • Grow: Causes the user to double in size, allowing them to squish other players and gain invulnerability. However, their speed is slightly reduced when driving off-road.
  • Shrink: Shrinks all players in front of the user, forcing them to drop their items and making them vulnerable to being squished by larger players.
  • Ballhog: Fires five bombs that bounce off walls in a spread-out pattern, creating an explosive hazard for opponents.
  • Pogo Spring: Causes the user to jump high into the air, helping them avoid danger or steal a bumper from another player in Battle Mode.
  • Instant Kill: Instantly kills any player it touches and displays a message indicating who was hit. This item has a very low chance of appearing.
  • Fake Item Box: When picked up, it causes the user to drop their current item and activates a three-second countdown leading to an explosion. The explosion can be triggered early by pressing the item button, potentially catching other players in the blast.
  • Mine: Can be thrown forward or placed as a trap. When triggered, it explodes, damaging any nearby players.
  • Self-Propelled Bomb (SPB): Bombs that target and pursue the player in first place, exploding on contact. However, skilled players may be able to avoid them entirely with careful driving.
  • Thunder Shield: A shield that forms automatically and sends out a thunderclap when triggered, spinning out any players caught in the blast and destroying Self-Propelled Bombs.

These items add an element of strategy and excitement to the game, allowing players to defend themselves, attack opponents, and gain advantages during races and battles.
