Driving your car rental in Hamburg takes you over bridges and along scenic routes by the water. Mönckebergstraße is the main shopping street. Also known as the Mö by locals, it runs between the main train station and the town square and is close to many interesting spots. The main routes into the city are the A1, A7, A23 and A24. The legendary German autobahns can get congested, so you might consider an optional add-on of GPS to help you navigate the traffic and find the best routes. Parking rental cars here can be inexpensive, or even free in some areas. There is free and metered parking in the city center as well as other parking facilities. Take a drive across the Köhlbrandbrücke for spectacular views of the harbor and HafenCity, then head to the docks for a closer look. This urban development offers shopping and the new, eye catching Elbphilharmonie building, where you can see a live classical music performance. To experience some of the more recent history of the city, drive along the Reeperbahn. This is where The Beatles made their home in the early 1960s, perfecting their music with almost 300 live performances in two years. You can even create your own gastro driving tour and try traditional foods like fish sandwiches with herring and the Franzbrötchen pastry.

Sightseeing Destinations

The Deichtorhallen has open steel and glass architecture and exhibits contemporary art and photography. You can buy a pass for the Kunstmeile, which allows you entry to these plus the Bucerus Kunst Forum, Kunstverein, and the Museum for Kunst and Gewerbe.
